Chapter Ten

Cherry

“My driver, Paul, will pick us up after dinner.” Ronan opens the door for me and steps to the side so I can walk into the restaurant.

A warm, comforting smell envelopes me when I enter the dimly lit restaurant. It’s nothing like the first place we met at. There are several two-seated tables set up all around and a few larger booths. All the surfaces are covered in thick linen tablecloths, giving it an authentic family-run vibe. The hostess smiles at Ronan and glides over to us.

“Hello Mr. Bay. Your table is ready.”

We follow her to a table over by the window with a trio of tapered candles lit in the center. She hands us each a paper menu and folds her arms behind her back. “I’ll give the two of you a moment.”

“Thank you, Roberta.” Ronan smiles at her and turns his attention to me. “The carbonara is to die for.”

The words on my menu are all jumbled from my excitement so a recommendation from him is welcome. Plus, this guy seems to love carbs as much as I do. “That sounds amazing to me.”

Not long after we order, we’re treated to a feast of Italian foods, beginning with a rustic loaf of bread and copious amounts of butter.

Ronan dives right in and motions for me to do the same. “They’ll keep bringing bread out, so eat until you’re stuffed.”

We fall into a rhythmic conversation as the meal progresses. Ronan’s such an open and warm person and I’m finding it easy to open up to him.

“Did you always want to get into this industry?” I ask before slathering butter on a wedge of bread, hoping he’ll give me a long enough answer to enjoy the entire piece before opening my mouth again.

“You know? I did. From a young age, I knew I’d be the one to take over the business from my dad and it always felt right.” He pauses and narrows his eyes. “You said this wasn’t your first choice. What was your first choice?”

I swallow the last bite of my bread and chug down some water as gracefully as I can. He smiles softly at me across the table; the candlelight enhancing his comforting eyes.

“I, uh, wanted to be an actress.” I look up at him, hoping he doesn’t call me out on this. It was the fastest lie I could come up with, and I’m certain I can’t come up with anything more convincing than that. It’s not a total lie—I wanted to be an actress when I was like five.

As easy as he is to open up to, I’ve experienced way too much pain around my dreams to share them that easily with anyone.

He’s silent for a long moment. I expect him to laugh, but he doesn’t. Instead, his brows knit together and he tents his fingers. “Interesting. I think you’d be amazing at whatever you wanted to do.”

“Thank you,” I murmur.

As excited as I am to try the dessert—a chocolate layer cake—I’m disappointed the night is drawing to a close.
